The major problem in effecting satisfactory control is the difficulty of detecting infestations of the weevils and borers. The mobility of beta amylase adsorbed on the surface of starch gel was studied with the fluorescently labeled enzyme. P. muriceus also pupates in the soil, but R. tucumanus pupates inside potato tubers. When rains start, adults emerge and feed mainly on leaves and stems of potato plants. This method was chosen over pyrolytic removal of the template to keep shrinkage of the framework to a minimum, with around 5% (acid treatment) compared to 30% (heat treatment). The majority of the known systems involved are male-emitted and the pheromones are often strong enough to attract both sexes from tens of meters away (Bartelt, 1999b and references therein). Gelatinized corn starch is more readily hydrolyzed by beta amylase, but it more readily retrogrades.
